IN THE STRAIT BETWEEN OFFERSÖY and Flakstadsöya, the water flows freely through Nappstraumen, starting as a narrow channel in the north over the tunnel connecting the two islands and then gradually widening towards Vestfjorden on the inside of Lofoten. In the middle of Nappstraumen is the small fishing community of Napp located, which quite understandably gave its name to the strait. The surroundings of Nappstraumen are stunning in many different ways. Just north of Skreda, the small cabin community where the camp is located, the mighty “Offersöyskammen” spreads out and for those who feel the urge to go on a hiking trip, you can be offered an incomparable view that beats most things. The southern part, on the other hand, is almost reminiscent off the sceneries from “The Lord of the Rings”, with its rounded rocky outcrops with hints of grass and trees on the western edge and the steep mountains in the east.
The Nappstraumen, which is relatively shallow, offers fast-paced fishing full of excitement. After only a few minutes by boat from the camp, the adventure really begins. Along the edges of Nappstraumen there are excellent fishing areas for halibut and the depth under the keel rarely exceeds 25 meters. It regularly happens that the sonar shows a bottom depth shallower than 10 meters when the heavy bite suddenly comes out of nowhere. Nappstraumen’s unique halibut fishing in shallow water is probably one of the best in Norway. Fighting a halibut in shallow water also tends to be something unique when the fish rush sideways. This means that you have to follow the fish with the boat to even have a chance of landing it. The possibility of catching a really big halibut in such shallow water has probably never been greater than right here.
However, it is not only the halibut fishing in Nappstraumen that is top class, but also the lighter fishing for its red-spotted relative, the plaice. With the good current and the smooth bottom here, this area is ideal and we dare to say that this is one of the better places for plaice that we have tried. Not only are there plenty of them in number, but the average size will amaze most people. Out on the north side, among its endless shoals and plateus, there are large stocks of cod and coalfish that are usually gathered in large shoals. A trip out here usually offers many laughs and happy faces but also tired backs and long arms. Around these shallow plateus and peaks, you will also find many other species such as ling, pollacks and of course plenty of halibut that are more than happy to join in the hunt for their next meal.
THE BRANCHED MOUNTAINS around Nappstraumen are ideal places for white-tailed eagles, which are a common sight in the area every day. Occasionally, orcas also make their way through Nappstraumen, although we usually catch glimpses of them in the open sea on the north side of Lofoten. If the weather turns harsh and the wind picks up, Nappstraumen is the optimal place, in terms of opportunities to still be able to fish. The strait itself is very sheltered from the weather and you can almost always fish in here. If you still want to go out in search of cod and coalfish, the south side of Lofoten, only a short distance from the southern parts, offers many interesting fishing spots sheltered from wind and waves if the wind picks up from the north.
The camp, which is located a few kilometers from Leknes, is scenic in its own right. But, after only a 5-10 minute drive, you are suddenly in the center of Leknes, where restaurants, pubs, well-stocked grocery stores and other leisure activities are waiting. There are also many attractions within a short distance of the camp for those who want to take a break from fishing. A cleaning area on the dock, freezer room and drying room just above make life at the camp easy. From the newly built and modern cabins you are offered a fantastic view through the panoramic window or why not sit in a chair on the large terrace outside while the sea waves lapping just below. The on-site guides will make sure you get the service and help you need during the week and can accompany you on a boat trip if you wish. They also run the camp’s well-equppied tackle shop, which has everything you need to succeed in fishing in the area.
With its proximity to everything from fishing spots to grocery stores and restaurants as well as the weather-protected fishing, Nappstraumen is ideal for families with children, beginners and experienced anglers who want to challenge the big halibut on a new level.
