Havøysund

AFTER CROSSING the endless expanses of Finnmark, where the road narrows more and more and the great sea comes closer, the road suddenly ends. Right here, at the end of the road, the old fishing community of Havöysund towers up. After the Second World War, Havöysund grew into a well-established and well-known commercial fishing area. The harbor was quickly filled with everything from pleasure boats to small and large fishing boats. Despite its inaccessibility, this has always been a well-functioning community and today about 1100 people live in Havöysund where most live on fishing in some form. Since 2009, we have been running a sport fishing business in Havöysund, something that the local population and professional fishermen have seen as very positive. The tourists give life to the community and several actors live more or less only on tourist fishing nowadays in this small community. Since its inception, Havöysund has taken the sport fishing world by storm and is now one of the most talked about and well-known areas in northern Norway, not least among the passionate anglers with halibut as their favorite. The variety of fishing spots is enormous and with several large islands, straits and rock formations, as well as the possibility of going east or west depending on the weather and wind, Havöysund is a fairly weather-protected place. In the waters around Havöysund we experience some of the wildest halibut fishing in Norway every year, which speaks for itself both in terms of quantity and the number of large fish. This is an eldorado for halibut without equal. However, Havöysund has so much more to offer than just halibut, and the only limit is your imagination. WHEN SPRING arrives, the area around Havöysund is filled with a variety of species and the sea seems to teem with life. On the shallows and in the bays there are now plenty of catfish on the mussel banks and rocky outcrops, but also in the sandy bays the haddock has now migrated in, which is a much appreciated feature of the fishing and both are fantastically tasty delicacies. Throughout the summer season, fishing is good for halibut, cod and saithe, but above all, new opportunities are now opening up at depth when the weather permits. On all the sharp deep edges around Havöysund and with hundreds of meters under the hull, those who are attracted by the temptations of the depths can find both large kingfish, ling, skate and much more. For those attracted by the sea’s smaller flatfish, there are also endless opportunities here in search of plaice, sand eel, mud eel and much more. The average size is high on both plaice and plaice where world record-sized fish have been caught here, which adds another dimension to why Havöysund is an incredibly popular fishing area in sea fishing circles. Right in the center of Havöysund, our cabins are located right on the water, perfectly appointed in every aspect. Havöysund Hotel is located next door with a restaurant open every day of the week, with delicious dishes on the menu, as well as a pub for those who want to have a drink after a long fishing trip at sea. It is also possible to stay in single rooms if you wish. Located in the middle of Havöysund, just above the harbor, the camp is perfectly located in all aspects. Within walking distance you will also find the village’s local grocery store which offers a good selection.

The camp is built as a fishing camp should be, with a freezer room, drying room, cleaning area both at the pier but also indoors under a roof for the cold and rainy days. The guides also run our fish shop where we have a large selection of baits and accessories necessary for fishing in the area. The nature around Havöysund is strikingly beautiful with a large amount of wildlife, both above and below the water surface. Humpback whales, killer whales and porpoises occasionally appear within sight, while white-tailed eagles circle along steep cliffs in search of their next prey. Near Havöysund is also Europe’s largest bird mountain, teeming with life from auks, puffins, razorbills and much more.
