Havøysund

AFTER CROSSING the endless expanses of Finnmark, where the road narrows more and more and the great sea comes closer, the road suddenly ends. Right here, at the end of the road, the old fishing community of Havöysund towers up. After the Second World War, Havöysund grew into a well-established and well-known commercial fishing area. The harbor was quickly filled with everything from pleasure boats to small and large fishing boats. Despite its inaccessibility, this has always been a well-functioning community and today around 1,100 people live in Havöysund, most of whom make their living from fishing in some form.

Since 2009, we have been running a sport fishing business in Havöysund, something that the local population and fishermen have seen as very positive. The tourists give life to the community and several actors live more or less only on tourist fishing nowadays in this small community. Since its inception, Havöysund has taken the sport fishing world by storm and is now one of the most talked about and well-known areas in northern Norway, not least among the passionate anglers with halibut as their favorite. The variety of fishing spots is enormous and with several large islands, straits and rock formations as well as the possibility to go east or west depending on the weather and wind makes Havöysund a fairly weather-protected place.

In the waters around Havöysund we experience every year some of the wildest halibut fishing in Norway, which speaks for itself both in terms of quantity and the number of large fish. This is an eldorado for halibut without equal. However, Havöysund has so much more to offer than just halibut, and the only limit is your imagination.

WHEN SPRING arrives, the area around Havöysund is filled with a variety of species and the sea seems to be teeming with life. On the shallows and in the bays there are now plenty of wolffish on the mussel banks and rocky plateus, but also in the sandy bays, the haddockshas now migrated in, which is a much appreciated feature of the fishing and both are fantastically tasty delicacies. Throughout the summer season, fishing is good for halibut, cod and coalfish, but above all, new opportunities are now opening up at depth when the weather allows for it. On all the sharp deep edges around Havöysund and with hundreds of meters under the hull, those who are attracted by the temptations of the deep sea fishing can find both large redfish, ling, skate and much more. For those attracted by the sea’s smaller flatfish, there are also endless opportunities here in search of common plaice, dabs and more species. The average size is high on both common plaice and dabs where fish in world record size have been caught here, which adds another dimension to why Havöysund is an incredibly popular fishing area in sea fishing communities.
