Å – The fishery

It is very close to many of the fishing spots and already after a few minutes boat ride from the harbor you are at places where you can catch both large cod, coalfish and halibut. The area has a very strong current and you have to choose fishing spots according to the prevailing conditions. This current attracts lots of baitfish, which in turn attract larger fish and the fish populations in the area is absolutely incredible.

Moskenesstraumen and other fishing grounds around Å are not so varied in terms of many species, but offer top-class fishing for those who want to target halibut, cod and coalfish in particular. The area around Å has delivered many really giant halibuts over the years and is well known in sport fishing circles. There is no other area in Norway that has provided that many giant fish through-out the years.

Every year, several halibut are caught that measure well over 200 cm and the camp record is a breathtaking 246 cm.

The area is also known to be home to Norway’s best population of large coalfish and fish between 10-15 kg are common. Periodically, the coalfish hunt very high in the water and this area is probably the only place in Norway where you can do topwater fishing for coalfish. The cod fishing is also at a very high class, so if you want a good chance of catching big fish without having to travel long distances by boat, this destination is for you!

Last but not least, the area is full of shallow skerries and peaks that holds large populations of pollack, a feisty fish with a powerful attitude that makes a great sport fish on lighter spinning gear.
